NPR's afternoon program All Things Considered had a story today about a high school basketball team that was being hypnotized to help improve their game.

Rejuvenating Massage
You have just arrived at a beautiful tropical island resort for a well deserved vacation. After walking through the resort's lush tropical garden you arrive at the picture perfect beach. You stroll down to the water to take in the view of the crystal clear water. After enjoying the relaxing sound of the ocean waves you head up the beach for a rejuvenating massage as your vacation begins.

With summer soon upon us my thoughts have been wandering back to high school. Or should I say my fantasies have been wandering to what should have been high school. I did not go to a Catholic or prep school. I think I would have liked to given the structure and possibilities.

Take 2: Metaphors can be used to communicate to others.  I can tell you a story about my activities as a child.  You can gather from the facts what I like to do and enjoy.  This is a verbal metaphor.

While I'm telling you this story of my childhood activities you observe my non-verbal metaphors.  You will notice I become uncomfortable, the pitch and tone of my voice changes to being disinterested, and I am no longer making eye contact as if I'm reading from a script.

If you were a therapist you might reach the conclusion that I did not enjoy my childhood as some people do or am hiding something.  In my case I had a very boring childhood and was usually detached from what was going on around me.

Another way a metaphor may be used in communication is the telling of a story.  Little Red Riding Hood is a children's fable used to teach children not to wander from the path and that women should be fearful of strange men.  Here the metaphor is designed to influence one's behavior.

Stories in the form of a metaphor can be used to influence others.  Metaphors are often used in teaching and therapy.  Dale Carnegie used stories in his books and seminars.  Here is a story for you.

I'm happy to have heard how much you enjoyed that special event a while ago.  This isn't the place to go into details, but those wonderful moments with special people are great to relive.  It's amazing how memories like that pop into our heads and add a bounce to our step.  I can see in your smile now what a exciting time you had.

When establishing report with subjects one of the communication tools used are metaphors.  Verbal metaphors are stories that parallel life situations.  Little Red Riding Hood is an example of a verbal metaphor.  Verbal metaphors also can be stories about real events.

Non-verbal metaphors include gestures, facial expressions, and posture.  Non-verbal metaphors are made by the subconscious.  Therefore they are more truthful than verbal metaphors. 

Paying attention to any difference between verbal and non-verbal metaphors provides insight into the subject's mind.  The subject could be saying that they agree with an idea while shaking their head no.  A hypnotist cannot base an assessment on a single instance of this.  A pattern must be identified.

A classic example of a non-verbal metaphor is when someone crosses their arms.  A common interpretation is that the person is being disagreeable or defiant.  I can say from personal experience most of the time when I cross my arms it is because I'm cold or being self conscious and don't know what to do with my hands.

Metaphors are one of the ways people communicate and are an important part of hypnosis.  Both the subject and hypnotist can use metaphors as a tool to achieve results.
